next to normal

produced by the stanford asian american theater project

next to normal was reimagined by an asian american creative team at stanford university to deconstruct notions of “perfect families” that exist within the asian american community. my production turned themes of mental illness inward on the characters to transform the production into a testament to memory and archives to investigate how memory keeps our asian american identity alive within and outside of the home. it questioned who the “home” truly belongs to.

next to normal performed for four performances to sold out audiences, selling out within 30 minutes of ticket release. subsequently, the company was invited to perform at uc santa cruz.
